'87 Kawasaki KX250 Project
06-07 Sleddin' Season
Guestbook
Well here is my project, an '87 KX250. I picked it up for free from my uncle last spring. He bought it new but only ended up riding it for a couple of years. He was flying across a field wide open and came up on a field line (gap between some fields, around our area its like a 6 to 12" wall, sometimes more), well he gave it throttle popped the front wheel up, hit it, and ended up going end over end while still hanging on to the bike. He ended up with a broken coller bone only rode it a couple of times after that. The bike only ended up with a bent upper frame (the bracket that the fender and muffler attach to).
It has sat outside for like 10 years and the last time it had ran before I got it was 4 years ago, so the motor was locked. All the plastic is shot, the grips were shot, the tires were cracked but somehow manage to hold air, the frame has some surface rust (thank god for aluminum), and there is no muffler.
I bought all new plastic except for the gas tank and radiator shrouds. I don't if I will get a gas tank, since they are a couple hundred bucks, although I probably will someday. I bought new grips for it and green o-ring chain along with a new front sprocket and rear sprocket. I went with different size sprockets then factory so I would take away some of the torque, I can't remember what sizes I bought anymore, its been awhile since I have looked at it. I swear the bike never stops spinning once it hits its power band
. Cool but sucks for the kind of riding I do (boondocking of the bike world). I have a new rear frame for it, but it's green and the rest of the frame is silver, so I may rip it apart and paint everything green, haven't decided yet.
I had been riding it around this summer, just to get the engine worked loose again, the cylinders were pretty bad, but I talked to a local mechanic and he figured just run it and it should clean itself up. Anyways, the sprockets and chain were pretty bad and the back wheel was a little crooked from the accident, but I didn't straighten because it was pretty stuck and I figure I would just wait until I got new sprockets and chain before pulling it off since it seemed like it would be a job in a half. So I was screwin' around one day and I came off an approach and I landed on the side of the ditch which must have tweaked the wheel a little bit and I eneded up ripping the rear sprocket off and shattering my rear hub. A few days later my sprockets and chain showed up...
I looked into it and a new hub from bikebandit.com was over $400 so I decided to wait and try to find a used one and until I got that I would hold off everything else. I almost had a whole rear wheel off of an '87 KX250 on eBay but I lost the auction, it only sold for $40.
So now my bike sits in the shop with the rear wheel laying next to it. My brother ended up buying my front sprocket from me this fall since I didn't need it anytime soon so he could put it on his '93 Yamaha Warrior. He needed some more torque, and it gave him what he wanted.
Now that I am in college the bike project might really get delayed, guess I will see how it goes this summer.
