The Indy Ressurrection
The first sled that I ever owned was a 1995 Polaris XCR 600, hence my username. After I customized it to look the way I wanted it to, I put it into a tree at 40 MPH. I wish I would have taken pictures BEFORE the wreck, but here is what it looked like AFTER the wreck.
That tree kinda ended my riding season. My first thought was to rebuild it, but I ended up getting a pretty good deal on another complete chassis... a '92 RXL 650 that melted down.
I had the engine from the wrecked '95 installed, upgraded to the '95 chaincase and brakes, added reverse, and a slightly deeper lug track... just in time for the '03/'04 riding season...
... during which I managed to ruin a ski, put a slight bow in the right trailing arm, trash the windshield, and bend the right foot stirrup.
New, for the '04/'05 riding season, I've decided to customize this sled to make it more to my liking. And fix the things I screwed up last season.
Since the sled already had an Xtra-10 rear skid (from a '98 XC 700) installed under it when I bought it, I didn't have to make that upgrade. However, I've added rail extensions from
www.TracksUSA.com
and a 1.25 X 136" track. I bought a pair of Fox shocks for the front suspension to replace the Polaris factory shocks. Sidehiller II skis from an '05 900 RMK that will be installed. Dropped down to the 8 tooth track drivers for clearance on the front cooler. Red extended brake lever. Red swirl idlers and bogies. Red Hyfax. Red 90 degree hooks. Red tunnel roll grips. Red hood screens. And, of course, a new coat of paint... black with some red graphics. (I'll add pics of the finished product when it's finished.)
Here are a few pictures of work in progress...
The sled went to the shop to have new bearings installed in the chaincase, driveshaft, and jackshaft. While it was there, the new track and driveshaft with 8 tooth drivers were installed.
I didn't take any pictures of the sled while I was reassembling it, so I don't have anything else left to post except for the finished product. It turned out pretty damn sexy, if I do say so myself.
That is what my sled looked like for the '04/'05 season, but I've been working on things again lately. I've bought several new small items that I will be adding sometime in the near future for the '05/'06 riding season.
I completely tore down my rear suspension for a good cleaning. I had the front and rear torque arms sandblasted and then had them powder coated in a nice bright red, I installed all new grease zerks, replaced a couple of bushings, installed a set of rebuilt Fox shocks, and did a quick job of polishing the rails. The red hyfax were installed last year.
The seat is from a '95 440. It's a one piece seat/tank combo rather than the two piece that I did have on it. I will post pictures of the finished product as soon as I get it all back together again.
Well, there you have it, the death and ressurrection of my Polaris Indy Custom.
